# Indication of withdrawn preprints

I came across some preprints that have been removed.
Using the Crossref API, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that this is the case?
These are the example DOIs:
- `10.2139/ssrn.3723171`
- `10.22541/au.160684072.22355285/v1`
- `10.22541/au.161796204.43986088/v1`
Am I missing a field that indicates that they have been “withdrawn”?
Is there another way that information should be found out?

Hello, and thanks for your question.
There are various ways to indicate a withdrawal in the metadata record (some better than others) but none of them are strictly required. We only require that the DOI for a withdrawn item resolves to a notification page which indicates the withdrawal there.
10.2139/ssrn.3723171 does resolve to a landing page with a withdrawal notice. But, unfortunately, 10.22541/au.160684072.22355285/v1 and 10.22541/au.161796204.43986088/v1 do not. A 404 error is definitely not sufficient! I can reach out to Authorea about correcting those.
