All our metadata retrieval methods derive their data from the same starting point: the xml metadata deposits that are submitted by our members when they register their content.
Typically, openURL is used as a method to link to the DOI resolution landing page when you’re starting with a reference (or the metadata comprised by a formatted citation), but not necessarily with the DOI. It can be used to retrieve metadata, rather than to resolve directly to the item’s landing page, but that’s a less common use case.
If you’re happy with the process of using the REST API, there’s no particular reason you would need to switch to openURL or one of the other query options.
