ROR ID for Report-Paper authored by Organization

I have a report-paper that has an organization (OSTP) as author. OSTP has a ROR ID. How can I include the ROR ID with the organization author?

I tried:

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)
<organization_id type=“ror”>Research Organization Registry (ROR) Search</organization_id>

but got the error:
[Error] :17:30: cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting with element ‘organization_id’. One of ‘{“http://www.crossref.org/schema/5.3.1”:organization, “http://www.crossref.org/schema/5.3.1”:person_name, “http://www.crossref.org/schema/5.3.1”:anonymous}’ is expected.

Hi Bess,

That’s not currently possible. So far, at least, we only allow RORs as affiliations. And organizational contributors don’t have institutional affiliations, since they are themselves institutions.

It’s an interesting use case, and I’ll report it to our Head of Metadata as an example of how we might further incorporate RORs in future schema versions.

Best,
Shayn

I have a related issue which I wasn’t able to post as a new topic (sorry, I’m still new to this community), hence I’m following up here. Apologies if it would have been more appropriate to post it elsewhere.

Question: Is there some way to add ROR identifier information for organization contributors?

Background: Last year, we started registering DOIs for all > 20,000 software packages on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). When depositing the Crossref metadata we try to provide as much information about the contributors to these software packages as we have. In particular:

  • For <person_name> elements within the <contributors> we can add the ORCID information.
  • However, for <organization> elements within the <contributors> it appears that we cannot add the ROR information.

The reason for this is that according to the organization element in the schema there are no children (or attributes) where this information could be added.

Examples for organizations as co-authors in R software packages are:

  • CRAN package foreign, co-authored by the R Core Team
  • CRAN package ellmer, where Posit PBC is funder and copyright holder

Apologies once more for re-upping this. I posted my question above two weeks ago and I’m simply not sure whether this was overlooked (because I didn’t post it the right way or with the necessary details) or whether there is no answer that anyone could provide. If anyone from the more experienced community members or moderators could provide some comment, this would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hello @zeileis ,

Thanks for following up with us. The logic built into the forum creates a ticket for us over in our ticketing software when a new thread/category is opened here, but not when a new comment is added to an existing thread/category. So, sometimes we’re a little late to respond. Sorry about that!

I have also updated your account so you can create new threads/categories, so you can do that in the future, so we’re alerted more quickly.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed since Shayn’s message back in May 2022. We only allow RORs as affiliations . And organizational contributors don’t have institutional affiliations, since they are themselves institutions. So, we don’t yet support this use case. As Shayn initially said, this is an interesting use case, but not one that we hear about often, so we have prioritized other improvements to ROR and affiliation metadata ahead of this one.

Warm regards,
Isaac
