DOI Deposit Failure: ISSN Already Assigned to Another Journal Title

Dear Crossref Team,

We are facing an issue while registering/activating DOIs for a journal. During the metadata deposit, the submission is failing with the following error:

ISSN “25831356” has already been assigned, ISSN (25831356) is assigned to another title (Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture).

The diagnostic report is as follows:

ISSN "25831356" has already been assigned, issn (25831356) is assigned to another title (Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture)
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<doi_batch_diagnostic status="completed" sp="ip-10-4-0-83.ec2.internal">
   <submission_id>1756800734</submission_id>
   <batch_id>_1784616720</batch_id>
   <record_diagnostic status="Failure" msg_id="22">
      <doi>all doi's under the current journal element</doi>
      <msg>ISSN "25831356" has already been assigned, issn (25831356) is assigned to another title (Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture)</msg>
   </record_diagnostic>
   <batch_data>
      <record_count>1</record_count>
      <success_count>0</success_count>
      <warning_count>0</warning_count>
      <failure_count>1</failure_count>
   </batch_data>
</doi_batch_diagnostic>

We would appreciate your guidance on the appropriate steps to resolve this conflict and successfully register the DOI metadata.

Thank you for your support.

Dear Singh, greetings.
Thanks so much for your email.

To confirm, the title of the journal for which I am the chief editor, for which I am requesting the DOI, is ‘Journal of Capital Development in Behavioural Sciences’ with the ISSN 24490679 (Online) and 23543981 (Print). It is a multidisciplinary journal; volume 14 has already been published.

I will appreciate your further clarification on this matter.

Best wishes,
Afolakemi.

@epubsdkma As per the ISSN database, ISSN 2583-1356 belongs to the Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture.

Your journal will have a different ISSN. Kindly enter the correct ISSN assigned to your journal.

ISSN Number : 3048-7641 AIJFR

does that worked for you? Just curious

We don’t publish magazines at the moment

Good Morning,
Is the email address correct? Is it really for a UFG journal published by the Federal University of Goiás (UFG)? I ask because I couldn’t find this ID among the journals on the UFG Journal Portal.
Best Regards

Respected Shantanu Sir,

Happy Greetings!

It seems that the ISSN 2583-1356 has been already registered in the Crossref system and is associated with the journal Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture. Crossref does not allow the same ISSN to be used for a different journal title during metadata deposits.

To resolve this issue, please verify the following:

  1. Confirm that the ISSN in your XML metadata is correct and matches the journal for which you are registering DOIs.

  2. If the journal title has changed, ensure that the metadata reflects the correct title associated with the ISSN.

  3. If you believe the ISSN has been assigned incorrectly in Crossref, please provide:

    • The journal title you are trying to register.

    • The ISSN (print and/or online, if applicable.

    • The DOI prefix.

    • The XML metadata or the journal metadata section that you are depositing.

  4. If the journal has been assigned a new ISSN by the ISSN International Centre or the national ISSN agency, update your metadata to use the correct ISSN before resubmitting.

Once the ISSN and journal title are consistent with the official ISSN registration, the DOI metadata deposit should process successfully.

        Thank you
                     Sincerely Yours
                         Dr Zubaida Khatoon

Dear team
I apologize for the confusion. This email address does not belong to a journal of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). It is the official email address of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), which is used to coordinate our collaboration.

Hello all,

Collin from Crossref here. If you’re wondering why you received this message, it’s because it was posted in a channel on Crossref’s community forum that sends and email alert to all active members whenever anyone posts in it. We’ve restricted new posts in this channel to Crossref staff now. I’m going to respond to this question and then lock the topic; if you have any further questions, please feel free to start a new discussion.

@epubsdkma asked why they were receiving the error message ISSN (25831356) is assigned to another title (Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture) when they were attempting to deposit a metadata record. I want to highlight @kzubaidasussex for your helpful response; you are correct. The problem is that Crossref’s system requires that the title submitted for a particular journal match the title we have on file for that journal based on earlier metadata deposits. In this case, you were attempting to deposit metadata records with the journal title ISAH Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture, but the title on file in our system based on existing DOI deposits is Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture (no ISAH at the start). Because these titles are different, the deposit is failing.

What can you do? You will either need to:

  1. Retry the deposit with the title updated to the title we have on file, Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture, or
  2. Send a direct message to our membership team to request that we update the title on file to ISAH Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture, then retry the original deposit.

Note that this journal also appears to be held in our system by a different member, so we may also need to conduct a title transfer from that membership to your own membership. If you contact our membership team, we will be happy to discuss this with you further.

If anyone has any other questions about other journals or about anything else DOI-related, please visit our Community Forum and post a new topic. We’re always here to help!

Dear DKMA team,

For any metadata registration to be processed successfully, Crossref’s system validates that the title, prefix, ISSN/ISBN, and user role in the submission match the corresponding records for that title in the system.

In your deposit, the journal title is listed as “ISAH Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture.” However, in our system, the title is recorded as “Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture.”

If the title in our system needs to be updated, please let us know. Otherwise, please register the DOIs using the title exactly as it appears in our records: “Indian Journal of Arid Horticulture.”
