Request for Guidance on Adding a New English-Language Journal to Existing DOI Prefix

Dear Crossref Team,

Previously, our organization registered a DOI prefix for one journal that publishes our local-language publications.

We would now like to use the same DOI prefix to register DOIs for articles in a different new journal dedicated to publishing our English-language publications.

Could you please advise on what updated information we need to provide to Crossref to proceed with this?

Thank you for your guidance.

Hi Vu,

Thanks for reaching out.

When you become a Crossref member, you are assigned a prefix. To register your content, you use that prefix and create a suffix for each piece of content (e.g., 10.xxxx/yyyy). So yes, you can certainly register your new content under the same prefix.

In our system, every piece of content—and therefore every DOI—is recorded under a title record. When you successfully register your first DOI for a new journal, our system automatically creates a new title record for that journal, for example. From that point onward, all future registrations are validated against the title information already stored in the system.

For any metadata deposit to be processed successfully, Crossref’s system checks that the journal title, prefix, ISSN/ISBN, and your user role match the existing title record in our database.

For your case, you can go ahead and register your first DOI of your new journal without any prior setup. Just make sure that the journal title and ISSN(s) you enter are correct and consistently spelled. This will ensure that future deposits are validated and processed smoothly, since all later submissions must match the established title record.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
